Welcome to the North Shore Welcoming Action Committee
In recognition of growing diversity within the communities of the North Shore and the need to coordinate and collaborate to ensure the development of welcoming and inclusive communities, service providers on the North Shore have come together as the North Shore Welcoming Action Committee (NSWAC).
In April 2007, North Shore Multicultural Society and its partner, the North Shore Neighbourhood House, collaboratively completed a grant application to the United Way for funds to support a "convening table". The application was successful and, as managing partner, NSMS was awarded funds to coordinate the NSWAC for three years.
The intent of the North Shore WAC is twofold. The first is to convene a group of key community stakeholders to work collaboratively to identify and address issues faced by immigrant and refugee newcomers as they integrate into the communities of the North Shore. The second is to build organizational and community capacity as it relates to the development of communities and workplaces that are welcoming and inclusive.
The North Shore Welcoming Action Committee and its work is made possible through funding from the United Way of the Lower Mainland, the Government of Canada and the Province of British Columbia.
"Canadians say their country is not a melting pot of many
cultures but a quilt, where each culture and its traditions contribute a
distinctive color. To me that kind of woven fabric of different heritages is
particularly obvious in Vancouver, western Canada's urban hub."
